Animals have played an integral role in our lives since the beginning of time. Both as companions and workers, they have been at our side, faithfully fulfilling their role. Recently, animal cruelty, exploitation, and neglect have been highlighted as a global issue.
ADANA is an animal rescue association with 20 years of experience in caring for and re-homing thousands of abandoned animals. By making a pilgrimage the length of Spain, volunteers accompanied by dogs from our refuge in Estepona are setting out to:
|
The Walk Volunteers leave Estepona, on Sunday the 15th of March and arrive in Santiago de Compostela on the 2nd of May. On the way there will be meetings with other animal protection organizations, visits to schools and a media campaign to ensure maximum coverage of the event itself and to highlight the problems faced and caused by abandoned animals. A maximum number of 15 walkers per week and 15 dogs from our shelter will average 24 kilometres per day. Support teams for the human and canine walkers, such as guides, accommodation (hotels, pensions, camping places or pilgrim hostels), food and drinks will be provided by ADANA for a fixed weekly charge. Volunteers can participate on the walk from one to seven weeks, choosing the part of the trail which most interests them. The first part from Estepona to Seville is incredibly beautiful and varied, crossing mountains, green fields, and passing some of the famous white villages of Andalucia. From Seville on the route follows the southern Spanish Saint James trail called Ruta de la Plata, a more peaceful alternative to the rather crowded traditional route in the north. It runs from Seville via old tracks and roman roads to Santiago, travelling through an unexplored part of rural Spain. The route also includes some of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country such as Mérida, the ancient Roman capital of Spain, and Cáceres. In the last decade walking the Saint James Trail has again become very popular. A great number of pilgrims walk on the different trails to Santiago in search of spiritual enlightening, peace of mind, or simple for the joy of walking through open countryside. Unfortunately most accommodation in Spain does not allow dogs, this includes the Pilgrim Hostels. The “Camino Project” offers the unique possibility to walk this trail with dogs. A support vehicle will carry luggage and dog-food and when necessary participants in need of assistance. A secure overnight camp for the dogs will be set up if host accommodation is not available. Local vets will carry out regular checks to ensure the dogs are in peak condition. The majority of the canine volunteers will be selected from the ADANA Shelter. However, there are limited places for volunteers to walk with their own dogs. By finding sponsors for our dogs you can help to raise funds for ADANA's new sanctuary and education programmes as well as supporting local animal rescue organizations along the way. Come and join us, walking with them and for them.
We thank you for your help:
